Optimizing Operations With Digital Tools

Digitalisation of products and service is now an integral element of every business process. Its impact on company performance however, is not yet fully recognized. In this study, Italian startups are analysed to determine their digital behaviour. Particularly, the implementation of inter-organizational and intra-organizational infrastructures is considered. Through a mixed method approach that includes manual analysis (Step 3) and computer-assisted analysis (Step 4), and confirmation analysis (Step 5) are triangulated in order to determine the most important factors that affect the digital behavior of Italian startups.

The analysis of the data shows that on average, Italian startups use 1,23 inter-organizational and 1,75 intra-organizational structures. It is also evident that the adoption of digital infrastructures by Italian startups is sporadic. On average there are only two inter-organizational networks that are utilized and 68% of analyzed startups have only implemented one intra-organizational infrastructure.

These findings suggest that the large majority of Italian startups employ a digital follower mindset rather than a more advanced digital leader behaviour. The main reason for this might be the fact that, despite being enrolled in the Startup Act policy initiative, they aren’t yet mature enough to be able to implement digital leadership strategies. It is for this reason that it is suggested to the government that they implement new policies aimed improving the digitalization of Italian Startup Ecosystem. This could include, for instance public financial incentives aimed at facilitating the digitalization of startups.
